About the Class

Idea Lab is a drop-off art class for kids ages 3-5. We explore a variety of materials and techniques, all aimed at supporting creative confidence. During this class, we focus on building creative and social skills in fun, open-ended ways.

Highlights of Idea Lab include:

• Creative playtime in the studio: children learn through play, so we start our class off moving freely in the studio. The studio is full of art materials, invitations to create, and spaces to collaborate. We see the studio as our third teacher (you are the first teacher, I am the second teacher, the studio is the third teacher) and during this play time, I am making note of how kids create, finding opportunities to extend their play, and creating an atmosphere of trust and creativity.
• Snack and story time: we begin to transition into the next half of class by slowing down with food and a story. Sometimes our story time is an actual book, other times it might be series of images we can discuss while the kids’ recharge, either way we are looking at something that will inform our project of the day.
• Project of the day: we spend about 20 minutes working on a focused project. The project is open-ended and introduces core art skills that children will be able to use to build a creative toolkit.
• Reflect and say goodbye: we take a moment to reflect on our class before we head off.

Policy:

• We don’t do drop-ins, many of our projects take place over multiple classes. Art is a practice, we need time to build trust, a routine, and skills.
